About me

Shipeng Ouyang

Regarding experience, thanks to my early interests, my mother provided me with an environment to learn fine arts and painting from childhood. Initially, classical academic art training led me to question the meaning of art itself, and for a long time afterward, I sought, explored, and deconstructed its definitions. I’ve lived successively in Wuhan, Munich, Berlin, Cologne, and Shanghai, where I also met my current wife, who is from Sapporo. Immersed in diverse cultures, languages, and urban atmospheres, I have gradually come to understand the concept of art. Ultimately, whether through technique, ideas, or feelings, expressing oneself through various channels might just be an artist’s greatest pursuit.

Regarding personality, I previously had a strong aversion to teamwork. I once believed the cost of communication outweighed the efficiency I could achieve working alone, that collaboration never equaled a straightforward 1+1=2, but perhaps only 1.1. However, my friends from my advanced studies significantly changed my perspective. Effective communication, management, planning, and feedback can turn that 1.1 into something much greater. Sometimes, the extra 0.1 gained through cooperation is something working alone could never surpass.

Regarding skills, due to my studies at university and postgraduate programs, I have extensively absorbed knowledge related to computers and computer graphics. Specifically, I can assist you in creating various projects including images, videos, 3D models, software, websites, and games. To put it more concretely, whether you want to develop a physical product, publish a game on Steam, or produce a series of content tailored for social media, I can provide comprehensive technical support. Beyond the computer realm, I am also skilled at decision-making, planning, and offering insights from diverse cultural perspectives.

Regarding interests, I remember back in elementary school, when I tore pages from my notebook—using the largest piece to draw a game map, and smaller pieces to create characters, monsters, and NPCs. During breaks, my classmates eagerly gathered around me, competing to join the game. I managed their skills, health points, monster battles, and quest assignments. Through this rudimentary interactive gaming device, I experienced captivating moments of communication unique to interactive art. Perhaps it's precisely because no words are needed, enabling visitors and creators to understand each other silently and intuitively. As a creator, I'm captivated by this dialogue across time and space with future experiencers. Even though not all designs and communications can be conveyed perfectly, witnessing players absorb the carefully crafted messages I intended provides an extraordinary sense of fulfillment and wonder—a highlight of interactive art unmatched by other forms.

A VR project set in a room in Cuba.
At the beginning, I thought this would be an incredibly boring project — showcasing a dilapidated room seemed to have almost no value. But as the project progressed, everything started to feel strangely meaningful. The flickering light and the aged furniture became mesmerizing, evoking a sense of disorientation for a brief moment. Perhaps a story told without language is the most liberating form of interaction for the viewer.
Looking back at the early days of development, I’m surprised by how much has already been done.
At times, we had to make compromises due to technical limitations. But by the second month, the solutions came to us naturally. It all felt as if the world had been choreographed like a grand theatre.
